Joyous New Year and Christmas celebrations, bustling Nativity plays, melodic Ukrainian Christmas carols sung by the young and old, exceptionally tasty local Christmas dishes and warm cosiness of coffee-houses with snowstorms blowing outside. “Christmas in Lviv” is Christmas you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
February
Winter in Rynok Festival not only consists of various cultural events, but also gives an opportunity for active recreation. Skating among medieval architecture to classical and folk music from all over the world is an unforgettable attraction for both children and their parents.
March
The citizens of Lviv are active people. No sooner does the spring sun start to shine, than the people of Lviv begin taking part in various actions and flash mobs. Last year young citizens of Lviv supported their city in the contest for hosting Euro-2012 matches in this way.
April
Easter in Lviv is an unforgettable and authentic celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. It includes numerous folk festivals, youth entertainments in Shevchenkivsky Hay (Shevchenko Park) open-air museum of folk architecture, and wonderful “paskhas and sausages” which taste especially good after the lengthy Great Lent.
May
The Day of Lviv is celebrated on the first Sunday of May and is dedicated to the city’s patron – Saint George the Dragonslayer. Medieval knights and craftsmen go out into the streets, monks treat the passers-by with freshly brewed beer, and thousands of citizens of Lviv take the opportunity to walk to the sounds of brass bands beside the actors of local theatres in the City Parade.
June
This is when Lviv becomes the most romantic city in Ukraine. It’s the time of love, joy and dreams coming true. Young couples walk through the streets, elder people melancholically watch the brides and fiancés and recollect their own youth, while tourists take pictures of newlyweds.
July
Summer in Rynok is a never-ending chain of various artistic events. Guests from everywhere come here to listen to open-air concerts of such prominent artists of the world as Viktoria Lukyanets or Al di Meola. And in between the concerts you can try learning Latin American dances right there in the square.
August
Being patriots of their homeland, the people of Lviv and especially eager to celebrate the Independence Day. Not only tourists come here to feel this atmosphere, but also the most well-known musicians in Ukraine who play their concerts for the citizens of Lviv.
September
In late September, when Lviv becomes the capital of Ukraine in terms of books, our city is jokingly nicknamed “The Bookburg”. The Publishers’ Forum in Lviv is the largest book fair in the country. For several days the city is flooded with writers and poets both from Ukraine and abroad. Tens of thousands of readers visit numerous presentations of new books and meet their favourite writers.
October
The golden autumn in Lviv is a traditional theatre season. The Golden Lion International Theatre Festival is one of the oldest fests in the city. Melpomene’s spirit comes to life in theatre halls and right in the streets of the ancient city.
November
90 years ago, on November 1, 1918, the Ukrainians of Lviv started the November Uprising. The blue-and-yellow flag hoisted on the tower of the City Hall symbolized the declaration of the West-Ukrainian People’s Republic. The history of WUPR is a bright example of dedication of Ukrainians of Halychyna to struggle for free life in their own land.
December
Jazz Bez Festival is a real gift for jazz gourmets. The clubs of Lviv hospitably open their doors to well-known performers from Europe and America as well as for numerous connoisseurs of music. It is said that Lviv is the best place for original improvisations to be born, since Lviv’s architecture itself is the music of centuries frozen in stone.
